The ACEER operates a small nature centerandgarden in the
village of Cahuide, alongthe Nauta Road outside of Iquitos
in northeasternPeru. The center serves primarilyourlocal environmental education purpose and is visited by school
children
throughout the region. It is also a component of
a joint project with local villages to create a children’s
rainforest reserve within the Rio Itayu watershed. The
villages of Cahuide and several other villages within the
watershed are petitioning the government to create a conservation
concession to protect the watershed from encroachment spurred
by the completion of the Nauta Road. In addition to
operating the center, ACEER is supporting research, by local
university scientists, required by the government, in support
of the application for a conservationconcession.
